There are not many ways to get to South America from New Zealand and the easiest way was through Papeete, to Los Angeles
and then down to Panama. Tahiti was a night stop-over
of an hour or so, but my flighs into LA and out to Panama were nearly 24 hours apart. It looks like a
stopover of a couple of days was called for. Los Angeles does not feature highly on favourite airports,
but I found I was through Homeland Security soon enough and alone on foreign soil.
The dollars do not go far in the US, and my hostel was memorable for its depressing atmosphere. Still, it
was right on Venice beach, and so it was an incentive to get out and about. There was a lot to see and do,
and except for one trip into the down town area, I stayed around the beach.
Next stop - Panama.
