Chiriquí province is in the south west of the country, and I travelled by bus to David.
The bus journey was my first on the trip, which made it one of the most memorable. I was so nervous -how could
I get to the bus station, how could I get a ticket, how could I find my bus? In countries where very few people
own cars, the bus is the main form of transport and a city bus station can be enormous with literally hundreds
of buses. Once I was safely in my seat, my bags beside me, I enjoyed just watching the countryside go past on a
journey east which took nearly a day.
After a night in the town of David, I headed up the mountain to Boquete. Just a town with a few hundred people,
it was a great place to fill in a few days. I wish now I was a little more organised, as
there are nature walks through the forest. Getting to the walks was reasonably difficult - especially
with my Spanish language skills.
The hostel stayed in was one of the best - a clean and tidy room, and a lounge where you sat around and
talked with other guests. Boquete was a very freindly place - I walked up one day high above the town into
the surrounding hills and was caught by the daily rain showers. As I waited under a gateway by the road side.
I started talking with a retired Canal zone employee, who ended up dropping me back to the village, saying he
was going down anyway. After the heat, humdity and pace of Panama City, it was a refreshing place to be.
